Working the crowd

The crowd and the wedding couple

I love the idea of a couple sharing an intimate kiss in the midst of a busy public place. Something reminiscent of that famous photograph of the V-J sailor kissing the nurse in the middle of Time Square in 1945. A couple in their own little world oblivious to their surroundings.  Here’s a couple of images illustrating this. The first is shot at Sunset Bay Beach Club on a hot and humid summer day. Needless to say the beach is a popular place to be.

We worked most of the time in the sandy dunes and break walls away from the crowd. At the end I talked our bride and groom, Stephanie and Frank to wade through the sea of people and find a spot to embrace and kiss. My favorite part of this photo is that nobody is paying attention to them at all. That’s what makes it work for me.

I cannot think of a better place for a public display of affection than Grand Central Station in New York City. Lisa and Kevin had a New York City wedding at Christmas time. The city is always bustling,  especially at Christmas time. Grand Central is crazy with everyone coming and going in a hurry to meet and greet loved ones. What I love about this shot is the blurs of people as they rush through the terminal in a snake like pattern. This wedding was a lesson in street photography. You literally go with the flow and just have fun with it.

Logistical challenge is involved with shooting in crowded places but  the resulting image is worth it. Wedding photography in the genre of everyday life. We have couples that want wedding photos taken in places like Niagara Falls and Canalside. In the summer it is impossible to not get a background dotted with tourists. I tell our couples to not fight it but to embrace the throng. Work the crowd.
