Senior Portraits part IV The senior musicians.

There are two popular themes in High School senior portrait Photography.  One of these is the athletes and the other is the senior musicians. For many students music is not a hobby or pastime, rather it is their passion. Musical instruments make great props for posing the students hands and as a result raises their confidence and comfort level with the shoot.  Familiarity is key when working with students. It is safe to say that nothing is more familiar for them to work with than their own musical instrument.

 The studio musician

I like shooting musicians in the studio because there I can set a mood with lighting. Musicians are artists so I like our sets to have an artistic look with directional stage style lighting. Here are a few of our senior musicians photographed in the FCI studio.

Taking the act on the road

Taking the senior musicians out on location is a great way to get that special shot you can’t always achieve in the studio. I especially like the juxtaposition of a formally dressed senior in an informal environment such as a beach. This brings us back to our old stomping grounds of Woodlawn Beach in Blasdell, NY.  The one thing you can usually count on along the shores of Lake Erie is a stiff wind. As a result blowing hair, flowing dresses and active surf make for dramatic images.

Another frequent backdrop at the beach is dramatic storm clouds. This is one of my favorite images taken of a Senior musician on location. I love the texture of the washed up tree.

Tuxedos and cellos in the sand? Why not. It’s time to step out of the ordinary!

Not everyone prefers to rock a tuxedo. Some seniors just want to rock.
